Her Campus: Making Her-story
Her Campus is a brand that has been popular for years now across college campuses with young women during the formative years of their university experience, and their post-graduate years. I chose this particular brand to audit because I think it gives a little bit of everything; almost a one-stop shop, if you will. Women can learn about current news, relationships and sex, money and career, style, wellness, beauty, and there's even a place for jobs and internships. There's a great "after college" section as well.
I think one of my favorite things about Her Campus is that it defies this age-old idea that you have to be either feminist or feminine. I personally believe that there is empowerment in choosing to be both (if that's what you enjoy, of course), and I like that Her Campus is pink, and bright, and talks about both face masks and things like gun control or and social inequalities. They show that you can enjoy the things you enjoy and be a strong, empowered, bad*ss woman. That's why I've chosen to focus on them at this time.
My first experience with Her Campus was in my undergraduate career. My roommate at the time had been introduced to the website, and she wanted to start a chapter at our university. We had discussed doing it, but at the time I was not able to get involved, because of my prior commitments to my double major, sorority, RA job, etc. However, Her Campus did start on our campus, and I always enjoyed reading the articles and seeing the great work that came out of it.
Now, even after graduation, I still actively read their website and will be attending their conference later this year (more about that later!)

"We’re basically a community of BFFs that love to tag each other in memes, talk about sex, and share the best skincare tips. We keep up with celeb news and feminist politics (reproductive justice anyone?), and we’ve got the insider info you need for landing that dream internship or making the perfect mug-cake in your dorm.
Here’s the deal: Her Campus is here to make your life easier while being 100% real with you at all times. We encourage, inspire, and celebrate. We provide no judgment, just real talk. We’re like, kind of your best friend."
Sounds like a great time, right? So how did this get started? How did Her Campus come into existence?
Well, according to their About Us page, a bit further up, Her Campus was born in 2009. Three women got together, realized there was a huge gap in mass media, and created an online magazine specifically pertaining to college women and issues they faced. Clearly, they were capitalizing on something huge, because they're now immensely popular all over the country. Here's the scoop directly from them to you:
And they do deliver. There are currently several sections on their website all relating to young women and issues they face. There are of course, the separate university pages, but then Her Campus nationally also has a steady stream of writers. They currently cover the following topics: culture, sex + relationships, lifestyle, money + career, wellness, style, beauty, high school, after college, jobs, sustainable style, festival, and "do the most." In addition, they also offer a conference each year called "Her Conference," which takes place in NYC and in L.A. This year will be the 8th year for Her Conference. This is their description of the conference:
Now in its 8th year, Her Conference® is the biggest, boldest gathering of college women globally. At each Her Conference, you will experience up-close interaction with industry leaders and badass keynotes covering everything from media, marketing, and entrepreneurship to entertainment, tech, social impact, leadership, and more.
They bring in some excellent keynote speakers to speak to college women, who have the opportunity to meet and network with the speakers, depending on which ticket they've purchased (I personally purchased the VIP ticket, so I can have front-row seating, meet + greets with speakers, and things such as that. All the participants also get a ton of free stuff from all the brands who are collaborating on the conference, and who doesn't like free stuff?! Here's an example of the NYC Layout this year:
I personally think that all of their content offerings as well as this event are pretty on brand for what they say they're about. They offer things that will help young women get to where they want to be in life, and they offer tools to help put things in motion.
I think public perception of this brand is pretty spot-on. I haven't heard anything about them ever doing anything in poor taste; people who know Her Campus love it, and that's so refreshing to see and hear! Maybe I'm biased; if you couldn't tell, I love them, too!
(@ Her Campus, are you hiring?! Hit ya girl UP!)
