HerCampus Explains It All
Like Clarissa. Get it?
We're here today to talk about blogging, which is incredibly lucky, because Her Campus is, at its core, a website for blogging. The entire website itself is a platform for blogs on various topics.
There are two ways they blog; through their national chapter and through campus chapters.
The national articles can be found under the subheadings at the top under "Sections". These are on various topics such as money, relationships, after college, wellness, etc. These are written by nationally chosen staff writers from Her Campus headquarters. These are Her Campus employees and thus a bit more selectively chosen than normal campus correspondents.
Campus correspondents are chosen at each university for each Her Campus chapter. These are college students, mainly undergraduates, who join their campus chapter to write about things relating to their own university. These can be generally relatable articles or things very specific to students at a certain school. For example, on the Sacred Heart Her Campus homepage, we have articles like "Fun Ideas for Things to Do Over the Summer" and "The End of the Semester as Told By 'New Girl'". We also have a "Campus Cutie" article that features a specific student at SHU, and an article called "5 Reasons Every Sacred Heart Student Should Consider SHU in Dingle."
As can be expected, the national articles all flow with the same type of voice more than the campus chapters. Presumably, the national staff writers all are chosen for their propensity to writer similarly, because these articles all do have the same tone upon reading them.
Campus correspondents don't have any such guidelines; they have to write about things relevant for college women, but that's very different depending on your geographic location and campus culture. There also isn't any requirements as to specific voice or tone of articles, so while one correspondent may write something of one opinion, another correspondent can write something of an opposing opinion. This is good for the sake of free speech, however, so I have to applaud it.
In terms of statistics, I could only find the Her Campus media kit from 2017 so that's what we're going off of. 95% of users are between 18-24 with the median age being 20, and 89% of users still being in college. They receive around 89 million views each month and have huge social media presences, as seen in this image below.
They have an incredibly informative media kit, with everything from partnerships to online presence in numbers to a breakdown of their different endeavors. I'm posting those here, because I think looking at it is more effective than me breaking it down into black and white sentences.
Of course, I think the Her Campus blogging platform is incredibly impressive. This entire brand has been built off blogging. They are a media company now acquiring other brands and companies. They are growing and spreading, and this all started because of a desire to begin a women's online magazine. Everything down to the physical layout of their media kit is completely on brand. That's something that impresses me so much about this company; every extraneous detail falls in line with the company, their physical appearance, what they stand for, etc.
Clearly, blogging is their safe space, their happy zone, and the foundation of the company, so yes, I'd say they have a great handle on it!
